Here at Dragon Technology Ltd we're huge fans of Ubuntu Linux, the user-friendly GNU/Linux distribution from Canonical Ltd, so we've created a product based on this excellent operating system.

This slim 4GB USB 2.0 pen drive is loaded with Ubuntu Linux (version 8.04, "Hardy Heron", for x86 architecture), ready to boot as a live GNU/Linux distribution. Now you can carry Ubuntu in your pocket, and thanks to the advantage of the writable USB key over a read-only CD-ROM, your own settings, customisations and data can travel with you when you use the device in "persistent mode" (the default).

This bootable USB thumb drive has been carefully crafted from the official 8.04 CD-ROM image to yield the same authentic "live" Ubuntu experience as the CD itself. After booting into the live Ubuntu desktop using this flash drive, you can optionally install Ubuntu to your PC's hard disk.

The flash stick is partitioned into two sections to allow the live distro to operate in "persistent" mode:

  • 0.8 GB : The Ubuntu distribution, equivalent to the Live CD.
  • 3.2 GB : The data area, where your own customisations, settings, data and installed applications are stored.

In addition to the 'persistent' and 'live' boot modes, this USB flash drive has a 'memcheck' boot mode which can be used to thoroughly test the memory on a PC for physical defects.

PC Requirements :

  • Intel x86-compatible CPU.
  • 384MB RAM minimum.
  • BIOS which supports booting from USB flash drive (i.e. most modern PCs).

Usage :

  • Insert the flash stick into a USB port.
  • Switch on the PC and enter the BIOS setup screen (usually accessed by pressing Del, F1, or F2 just after power is turned on).
  • Configure the BIOS to boot from USB flash as the first bootable drive.
  • Save the BIOS settings and reboot.
  • When the Live USB boots, you'll see the Ubuntu logo. Press F1 at the Ubuntu logo to see the Help Index for all boot options.

Notes :

  • Boot time is typically slower than CD-ROM (more noticeable in "persistent" mode), but once booted, performance of the Live USB system is very similar to the Live CD-ROM version.
  • Be mindful of storage space usage on the persistent data partition (the second partition on the drive), particularly when installing packages. If you completely fill up the drive space, the Live USB flash drive will be rendered unusable in 'persistent' mode. If that happens, you can still boot in 'live' (non-persistent) mode, and remove all files from the 'casper-rw' partition to effectively restore the USB flash drive to factory-new state (this would wipe out all your settings, customisations, and installed packages).
  • You can tailor the Live USB for your language and region by editing the append line underneath the persistent and live labels in the file syslinux.cfg which resides in the syslinux directory on the first partition of the USB drive. For example for a German Live USB, you would add the following to the append clauses (all on the same line, separated only by spaces):

    locale=de_DE bootkbd=de console-setup/layoutcode=de console-setup/variantcode=nodeadkeys

    For UK English:
    locale=en_GB bootkbd=uk console-setup/layoutcode=gb
  • Delivery to most world destinations within 7 days.
  • 14-day no-quibble money-back guarantee.
  • Goods guaranteed against physical defects for 90 days.
